Originally from South America, Miguel Angel Amortegui came to London in 1998 after finishing his general studies. He immediately became involved with a documentary project tracking Augusto Pinochet - the now deceased Chilean dictator - during his time in the UK. A great introduction not only to documentary making, reportage style, but also the mix of cultures in the melting pot of London. "Passport to Justice" was screened at a number of cinemas in the UK and many film festivals in Europe and Latin America.
Themes of culture and identity remain a constant thread in Miguel's work, as a Native Indian he recognizes the importance of recognizing your roots, your race and your native knowledge and sharing with other races and other communities is one of the most important steps in the formation of every human being to be able to value and respect other cultures.
Often you can see in his work how the central character of a piece suffers from being culturally displaced; for example Fernando, the Colombian chef who is setting off on his return home after a failed attempt at immigration in Hope (35 min documentary).
Miguel himself has felt the alienation of immigration, having very little English when he first arrived, his first few weeks as a runner in Soho led to some hilarious misunderstandings and some annoying frustrations, but 7 years on he has established his own production company “Changoman Productions” and spends most of his time working as a Director, DOP and Camera Operator on different projects around Europe.
With a few ideas burning for future documentaries, Miguel is also keen to move into fiction, in particular character driven dramas. With storytelling forming a large part of his native-Indian culture, his ambition is to script many of his stories into a feature films.
Changoman Productions was the post house choosen by directors and creative people from different backgrounds for the realization of many projects, some of them documentaries, short films, music videos, or even corporate videos.
